Hendricks Regional Health Implementing New Disaster Management System

Provider adds LiveProcess to disaster and emergency response services.

DANVILLE, IN (May 18, 2010) – Hendricks Regional Health will join a growing nationwide network of healthcare providers by adding LiveProcess, the market leader in web-based emergency preparedness and incident management solutions, to its repertoire of disaster and emergency response resources.

Hendricks Regional Health offers around-the-clock emergency care and air ambulance service, plus three satellite campuses housing numerous departments including immediate care, physical and occupational therapy and 23 physician offices.  In a disaster situation, Hendricks Regional Health needs to be able to coordinate staff and resources, while at the same time providing important, timely information to everyone involved. The hospital will begin using LiveProcess as another tool to help plan, manage, respond and mitigate emergency situations.

LiveProcess enables users to plan for disasters and emergencies, comply with regulatory and National Incident Management System requirements, and effectively respond to events in real-time. LiveProcess is used by more than 500 facilities nationwide for disaster readiness and incident command. Hendricks Regional Health will be the first hospital in central Indiana using LiveProcess. When other hospitals in the area begin using the program, they will be able to share and interact with each other during major events.

“One of the greatest challenges we have in a disaster situation is distributing accurate and timely information,” says Dr. John Sparzo, Hendricks Regional Health’s vice president of medical affairs. “LiveProcess will help us communicate in a way we have not been able to before.” LiveProcess will enhance the hospital’s ability to provide better patient care by providing an instant, real-time snapshot of vital area resources, such as bed availability. It will also improve overall business processes, such as communicating with area health agencies and schools during weather events or mass disasters. Another benefit is improved internal hospital communications, such as disseminating important news and announcements to the hospital’s 1,600 employees.

“Our hospital often hosts large-scale drills, the success hinges on communication,” says Dr. Sparzo. “We use the incident command system (ICS) feature to better coordinate these events.”

“We have been testing the LiveProcess system with internal groups in the hospital and we have been very impressed. I am confident it’s going to be a tremendous asset when responding to large-scale events within the community,” says Yvonne Culpepper, R.N. DNP, vice president of nursing at Hendricks Regional Health.  “With LiveProcess, I see our communications becoming significantly better because we can easily designate who is sent information and get that information out to individuals, teams or everyone quickly and succinctly. It’s also a huge advantage that we can communicate from anywhere, not just here in the hospital, during a crisis.”

During the H1N1 scare, hospital staff had to rely on face-to-face meetings or e-mail to stay up-to-date with ongoing events and constantly changing information from the county and state health department. With LiveProcess, personnel can now view the same communications in real-time. “The H1N1 crisis was a good practice run for us. In trying to communicate up-to-date information across several entities we identified shortfalls. LiveProcess pulls everything together and creates a central repository,” says Dr. Sparzo.
