VERONA, N.J. (August 10, 2009) LiveProcess industry-leading web-based emergency preparedness and incident management platform was put to the test August 7 during one of the largest mass casualty drills this year in Florida, and based on early reviews from hospital participants, it passed with flying colors.
The drill, which included a simulated terrorist attack involving a chemical, was conducted by the St. Petersburg Metropolitan Medical Response System in conjunction with Disasters, Strategies, and Ideas Group, LLC, Tallahassee, FL, an emergency management solution for preparedness, planning, recovery, response, mitigation strategies and ideas for local, state and federal governments and the private sector.
Pinellas Countys 12 hospitals participated in the event, which provided participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of their hospitals and first responders ability to respond to a mass casualty event.
From our standpoint, LiveProcess performed extremely well, said Larry Green, safety director for All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. Live Process Senior Systems Engineer Donna Hipp provided injects on the platforms event log, responding to hospitals as they communicated back and forth during the drill. That was a good learning experience for folks who had not yet been exposed to LiveProcess and what it can do for us, Green said.
LiveProcess is something were going to use all the time, whether its a live event or drill, he added. This exercise showed us how powerful LiveProcess is as a communication tool between hospitals and groups of people who need to share information and resources. Thats obviously what its all about. Green said he used the platforms emergency notification function the morning of the drill to communicate with participants from the new emergency department in All Childrens new 1 million-square-foot hospital, now under construction two blocks north of the existing hospital.
This allowed us to test a new patient decontamination shower system we installed inside the building and look at flow processes, such as a surge of patients, he added. It gave us an opportunity to look at our processes and improve upon them before we open in December. Once completed, the new All Childrens facility will be the largest pediatric center in the southeast.
Pinellas County is the second smallest, yet most densely populated county in the state. LiveProcess recently implemented its emergency management platform in more than 50 hospitals across the state of Florida. The company was established in the wake of the September 11 attacks and the worldwide SARS outbreak in response to widespread recognition that healthcare needed a better way to plan and respond to disasters.
